Water Heater Maintenance

How to Maintain your Tankless Water Heater

Regular Descaling

Tankless water heaters can accumulate mineral buildup, especially if you have hard water. Descale the unit at least once a year using a descaling solution to remove calcium and mineral deposits. Some manufacturers recommend more frequent descaling in areas with very hard water.

Flush the System

Flush the tankless water heater annually to remove any sediment or debris that might have accumulated. This process involves using a pump to circulate a vinegar solution through the unit to clean the internal components.

Clean the Filter

Tankless water heaters have a water filter that needs to be cleaned periodically. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the location and cleaning process of the filter. Cleaning the filter helps maintain proper water flow and efficiency.

How to Maintain your Electric Water Heater

Regularly Check the Anode Rod

The anode rod prevents corrosion inside the tank by attracting corrosive elements. Inspect it annually and replace it if it's heavily corroded or worn out.

Flush the Tank Annually

Over time, sediment can accumulate at the bottom of the tank, reducing efficiency and causing damage. Flushing the tank helps remove these sediments. Turn off the power and cold water supply, connect a hose to the drain valve, and drain the tank until the water runs clear.

Inspect the Heating Elements

Electric water heaters usually have two heating elements. If you notice a drop in water temperature or heating efficiency, check the elements for wear or damage and replace them if necessary.

Set the thermostat to around 120°F (49°C) to prevent scalding and reduce energy consumption. Check the thermostat periodically to ensure it's functioning correctly.
